The Problem
"Study skills are like a parachute: you can pack it neatly and look at it all day, but it only works when you jump and open it. Learning how to learn is a skill, and like any skill it improves with practice."

Who it's for

The right fit

Designed for For school leavers getting ready for college or university, students in any year who want to study more effectively, adults returning to study or learning something hard, tutors, mentors, residence and orientation leaders who work through it with a group, and parents and teachers who want to help young people study well.

A free course built on the LearnWell4Life video programme, Boost Your Brain for Study Success (2007). Each of its nine sections has a short video in English, Afrikaans or isiXhosa, the section's own mind map and a practical exercise from the original User's Guide: starting smart, motivation, learning in class, organising what you study, problem-solving, self-study, time management and balance, wellness and stress, and tests and exams. Where research has moved on since the programme was made, a short note headed “What we know now” shows what later studies found and what to do instead.

Common questions

FAQ

Is it really free?
Yes. The course is free: no card and no payment. Create a free FlourishIQ account, or use the one you have, and it is added to your library.
Which language are the videos in?
Each section's video is available in English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa. Watch it in the language you prefer, then work through the exercise on a real subject of your own.
How should I work through it?
The guide's own advice: watch the whole programme once for the big picture, then work through it one section at a time, preferably not in one sitting.
The programme was made in 2007. Is it still right?
Most of its advice holds up well. Where research has since moved on, for example on learning styles, a short note headed “What we know now” shows what later studies found and what to do instead.
