From the founder: Befriend Yourself — Your Self-Compassion Toolkit

When study gets hard. By Dr Alten du Plessis, founder of LearnSmart4Life.

This course is for the student who finds it easier to be kind to others than to themselves: the conscientious learner who keeps raising the bar, the one who meets a poor mark or a missed deadline with a harsh inner voice, and anyone who would like a kinder, steadier way of being through a demanding year of study.

Self-compassion means treating yourself with the same kindness and care you would offer a good friend. It rests on three elements, mindfulness, common humanity and self-kindness, and it is not self-pity or letting yourself off the hook. It holds kindness and accountability together, which makes it a steadier place from which to own a mistake and try again. Here you learn it in the body as well as in the head, through breath, touch, humming and kind words.

After a welcome, the modules build on one another. Self-Compassion 101 teaches The Self-Compassion Break, the short practice you will reach for most when something goes wrong, such as a test that did not go to plan. The Embodiment of Self-Compassion shows how the threat, drive and soothing systems work. Working With the Inner Critic and Self-Judgment helps you meet the critic with curiosity, including Two Letters: From the Inner Critic, From the Compassionate Self. You take My Self-Compassion Scale at the start and again at the end, keep My Check-In and Practice Log as you go, and finish with My Personal Self-Compassion Plan.

I suggest you begin with the Welcome module and its scale, at your own pace; there is no rush, and no right way to feel. A free 24-hour trial of the whole course is available.
