From the founder: Character Education

FlourishTalk: adjacent decks. By Dr Alten du Plessis, founder of LearnSmart4Life.

The Character Education deck is for the teacher who wants a classroom where character is caught, taught and sought, for school leaders building that culture, for learners of all ages growing in character alongside their studies, for university students reflecting on their intellectual, civic and moral development, and for parents.

It helps you form the virtues that make flourishing possible, through reflection rather than lectures. Character here has four kinds of virtue: intellectual virtues, the habits of mind behind critical thinking and the pursuit of truth; civic virtues, habits of service; moral virtues, habits of the heart; and performance strengths, habits of action that carry a virtue through difficulty. Practical wisdom holds them together, helping you see what a situation calls for and choose well when good things compete.

Each card holds one question on nineteen virtues and qualities, from Critical Thinking, Curiosity and Academic Honesty to Civility, Courage, Compassion and Resilience, and on to Integrating Values and Ethical Decision-Making. A card might ask how you approach decisions when virtues seem to conflict, or when you have shown courage despite fear. Like every FlourishTalk deck it is made for you, with your name on every card, and arrives by email as a print-ready PDF to print on cardstock and an eBook for a phone, tablet or computer.

For a learner I suggest beginning with the intellectual virtues, Curiosity or Academic Honesty, which sit closest to your studies. A teacher can use one card at a time to open student reflection on a single virtue.
